Rebecca Keating’s playful imagery celebrates the American Midwest in an intentionally modern, pop art style. Her work is known for its vibrant colors and humorous anecdotes of rural American archetypes. Her symbolic still lifes freeze the objects, substances, and legacies of rural blue collar living in a moment in time - celebrating them.
“I made the catfish pink to take an omnipresent symbol of my childhood and adorn it with the delight a child finds in a candy shop.
in this way, I was taking my childhood - that i had resented for so long - and embracing it with love and affection.”
Rebecca’s color square art visualizes and celebrates the range of emotion we experience as humans. The color square pieces are a meditation on the analogy:
SPECIFIC EMOTIONS : THE ENTIRE HUMAN EXPERIENCE AS A WHOLE :: SPECIFIC COLORS : WHITE LIGHT
Just as the many wavelengths of colored light are all contained within bright white light - the human experience contains all of the “wavelengths” of emotion. Some emotions we find more enjoyable than others. As an artist, Rebecca gravitates towards pinks oranges, and yellows. Much like as a human she prefers the emotions of excitement, inspiration, and determination. But without all the colors, we don’t have pure white light. Without experiencing and embracing all emotions we don’t embrace the entirety of the human experience. The color square art meditates on the ontological concept that no emotion is good nor bad.
“The color square style is where my work as an artist overlaps my profession as a life coach.”
